Special Steam-powered Traction Engine Operator
This is a standardized certificate of competency issued by Alberta. It is a certificate of competency that certifies the operator to supervise a Special Steam-powered Traction Engine.
Definition:
“historic boiler” means a boiler forming part of a traction engine, threshing machine, steam locomotive or other power plant of historic interest;

A historic boiler in a display or for the purpose of entertainment must be supervised by a person who holds a Special Steam-powered Traction Engine Operator’s certificate of competency.
A steam locomotive operating on a railroad subject to provincial legislation that has a capacity greater than 20 kilowatts must be supervised by a person who holds a Power Engineer’s Certificate of Competency of a class that meets or exceeds the requirements shown in
Table 1 of the Power Engineers Regulation.
To apply for a Special Steam-powered Traction Engine Operator examination, applicants must submit an examination application a minimum of 10 business days prior to the requested date.
Applicants applying for the written “Special Steam-powered Traction Engine Operator” examination must complete the AB-66d “Application for Special Steam-powered Traction Engine Operator Written Examination” form. Available examination dates can be found on the Power Engineer Examination Schedule.
Applicants applying for the practical examination must submit an AB-66e “Application for Special Steam-powered Traction Engine Operator Practical Examination” form. The practical examination must be taken in order to qualify for the “” certification. The practical examination is also a requirement for the renewal of this certification. Applicants submitting operating experience must submit an AB-66a “Declaration for Power Engineers Experience” form.
To qualify to take a Special Steam-powered Traction Engine Operator’s certificate of competency examination, a candidate must have successfully completed a course satisfactory to the Administrator.
A candidate is qualified for a Special Steam-powered Traction Engine Operator’s Certificate of Competency after:
(a) passing the Special Steam-powered Traction Engine Operator’s Certificate of Competency examination,
(b) completing 100 hours supervised operation experience,
and
(c) passing a practical examination that is satisfactory to the Administrator regarding the safe operation of historic boilers referred to in PER Section 2(11).
The practical training time requirements is 100 hours on a historic boiler, of which at least 50% of the time shall be while the boiler is under steam and in operation, the remainder of the required time may include maintenance, start-up or lay up of the historic boiler. Proof of Practical experience must be provided by completing and forwarding the declaration (AB-66a) OR submit AB-66(a) (online) of qualifying experience signed by the certified steam traction power plant operator of the historic boiler upon which the experience was gained.
The training records are to be forwarded showing dates, type of experience gained, signatures of the steam plant owners and certified steam traction plant operator, (if not one and the same). Attach these to the application form when applying
Effective January 01, 2019
The Administrator has established a new standardized reference syllabus for the Special Steam-powered Traction Engine Operator’s Certificate of Competency Examination, the AB-240, Edition 2, Revision 1.
Candidates that have not passed a Special Steam-powered Traction Engine Operator’s Examination after January 01, 2019, will be required to write the examination based on the new syllabus AB-240, Edition 2, Revision 1.

Special Steam-powered Traction Engine Operator’s Syllabus (Edition 2, Revision 1) Effective January 01, 2019
A Special Steam‑powered Traction Engine Operator’s Certificate of Competency expires 2 years from the date of issue. To be eligible for renewal the applicant must pass a practical examination that is satisfactory to the Administrator regarding the safe operation of a historic boiler.
