Ice Plant Operator

While there is no requirement for refrigeration plant operators to hold a certificate of competency in Alberta, the Pressure Equipment Safety Regulation does require that equipment owners ensure that persons operating the equipment are competent. Refrigeration plant owners are responsible to ensure that operators have the knowledge, skill, and experience required to operate the plant safely.

The examination provides a voluntary opportunity for personnel to demonstrate their knowledge of ammonia refrigeration plants to the standard established by the AB-309 Ice Plant Operator Examination Reference syllabus.

Since there is no associated certificate of competency for refrigeration operators in Alberta, successful examination candidates will be issued a document indicating they passed the examination. It should be noted also that both the syllabus and the examination question bank have been accepted by the Association of Chief Inspectors. Accordingly the examination results may be recognized by other Canadian SOPEEC jurisdictions including those that use the examination for certification requirements.

To apply for an Ice Plant Operator examination, applicants must fill out the examination application form, AB-66 (pdf), a minimum of 5 days prior to the requested date.

Once your application has been received, we will create a file for you and create your online account. Log in information will be sent to the email address you have provided on your examination application form. You will be able to change your personal information and see your examination results online through your online account.

There are no pre-requisites to write this examination.
