Eye Report (AB-95)

To obtain a Welding Examiner Certificate of Competency the candidate must pass examinations which consist of four (4) papers:

  • First Paper - Welding Processes and Filler Metals
  • Second Paper - Metallurgy and Materials
  • Third Paper - Quality Control and Weld Evaluation
  • Fourth Paper - Regulations and Codes

The certifications/designations the exam candidate holds determines which of the four paper(s) they will write. Please refer to “General Information” in the AB-94 examination reference syllabus for more information.
The time allowed for completing each paper is three and a half (3.5) hours. To pass the examination, a candidate must also present a current and satisfactory Eye Examination Report (ABSA For AB-95) or equivalent) before receiving their Welding Examiner Certificate of Competency.

Note: When preparing for “Quality Control and Weld Evaluation (Third Paper)” review the AB-92a. The AB-92a is a study guide (Sample Manual) and not to be brought into the examination room.

Candidates shall apply to write the examination by submitting ABSA Application Form AB-92 to ABSA at least 21 days before the examination date. ABSA provides a current examination schedule on line. WELDING EXAMINER (WE)

To renew the WE Series certificate, the candidate shall:

  1. submit an application by completing an application form, AB-93
  2. attach a current and satisfactory eye examination report, AB-95
  3. pay the renewal fee indicated on the application form

If a Welding Examiner Certificate of Competency (WE or WG) is not renewed before it expires, the Administrator may require the holder of the certificate to pass a written examination before renewing the expired certificate of competency.

The factors that determine whether a candidate who has an expired certificate is required to pass one or more written examination(s) to renew his/her certificate are:

  1. the amount of lapsed time, and
  2. the candidate’s work experience when applying for the certificate renewal.

GRANDFATHERED WELDING EXAMINER (WG)
To renew the WG series certificate, the candidate shall:

  1. submit an application by completing ABSA Application Form AB-93
  2. have the authorized testing organization that will employ the candidate sign the employment section of the application form
  3. attach a resume or equivalent document that provides information about your work experience
  4. attach a current and satisfactory (20/30 correctable vision) Eye Examination Report (ABSA Form AB-95)
  5. pay the renewal fee indicated on the application form

When the holder of a WG Series Certificate is to be employed by a new Authorized Testing organization, the candidate shall:

  1. submit an application by completing the form AB-72
  2. have the Authorized Testing organization that will employ the candidate sign the employment section of the application form
  3. attach a resume or equivalent document that provides information on the candidates work experience
  4. attach a current and satisfactory Eye Examination Report, AB-95

Application Form (AB-77)

To apply for a duplicate certificate or PQ card, complete an ABSA Declaration Form AB-77 and submit the form and fee to ABSA.

A Welding Examiner Certificate of Competency expires three (3) years after the day it was issued. Welding Examiners who choose to continue their certification will be required to renew their certificate before it expires. It is the responsibility of the Welding Examiner to apply to ABSA for certificate renewal three (3) months prior to the expiry date.
