Introduction to Ammonia Refrigeration Examination

As of October 22, 2019, ABSA will begin offering a newly created refrigeration plant operator examination to interested candidates. The exam questions were developed through the Standardization of Power Engineer Examinations Committee (SOPEEC).

While there is no requirement for refrigeration plant operators to hold a certificate of competency in Alberta, the Pressure Equipment Safety Regulation does require that equipment owners ensure that persons operating the equipment are competent. Refrigeration plant owners are responsible to ensure that operators have the knowledge, skill, and experience required to operate the plant safely.

The examination provides a voluntary opportunity for personnel to demonstrate their knowledge of ammonia refrigeration plants to the standard established by the AB-309 Introduction to Ammonia Refrigeration Examination Reference syllabus.

Since there is no associated certificate of competency for refrigeration operators in Alberta, successful examination candidates will be issued a document indicating they passed the examination. It should be noted also that both the syllabus and the examination question bank have been accepted by the Association of Chief Inspectors. Accordingly the examination results may be recognized by other Canadian SOPEEC jurisdictions including those that use the examination for certification requirements.

To apply for an Introduction to Ammonia Refrigeration examination, applicants must fill out the examination application form, AB-66 (doc) or AB-66 (pdf), a minimum of 10 days prior to the requested date.

Please allow 3-5 business days for processing and scheduling.

The examination fee is $97 per examination. Please view the ABSA examination schedule and ensure that you are available to write on the examination dates that you have selected on your application form.
