CRN Portal submission requirements

The CRN Web Portal is an Internet Browser based user interface that allows those with access to resources and services when submitting designs for registration. The purpose of the Portal is to provide users a simple and centralized location to upload documents and drawings to ABSA Design Survey department for registering designs in accordance with the regulations.

The Portal can provide confirmation that the submission has been received and to provide status throughout the registration process. The user will have access to the status of each submission.

The Portal is a platform intended for initial submissions and does not support interactive communication with Design Surveyors. We recommend using email for any necessary resubmissions or further communications between users and Design Surveyors.

The Portal has the capability to direct the submission to other jurisdictions for registrations. The majority of the Canadian provincial or territorial jurisdictions have agreed to use the CRN Web Portal for reciprocal designs. More detail on this service can be found in Section 3 of this document.

Acceptable electronic submission include designs of vessels, heat exchangers, boilers, fittings, pressure piping systems and weld procedures, with page size limited to 11” x 17”. This includes submissions of new designs, revisions, alterations, and repairs of these types of equipment. As mentioned above we also prefer to receive electronic submissions for national registration.

When your electronic submission has been received, a ‘Confirmation of Design Registration Submission’ is noted immediately on the CRN Portal and submission number is prompted/received, or a letter via email with a newly assigned tracking number. If you do not receive this confirmation within two full business days of sending an email submission, please contact us to ensure that the submission has been received.

The user will need access to the internet with one of the following Internet Browsers:

  1. Microsoft Edge version 15+,
  2. Google Chrome version 75+,
  3. Safari version 10, and
  4. Mozilla Firefox version 69+,
  5. Internet Explorer version 11+

Other web browsers may be used, however contact crnonline@absa.ca to confirm if your web browser can be used.

1. Format requirements :

  • Only PDF files with security features disabled will be accepted.
  • A single file maximum size is 10MB and cumulative submission size is 100 MB.
  • Each file name shall be 100 characters or less in length, this includes any directory names associated with the file.
  • A maximum of 60 mins stand-by time before the portal automatically logs the user off.
  • Edit, Chat, Status, Approval, Invoicing, and Assigning buttons are in development and their functionality will be released on a later date.

2. Attachment requirements :

  • For a new submission, an AB-31 Application Form must be uploaded as a separate attachment and the file must be named simply, “AB-31.pdf” for easy identification by administrative staff. (An AB-31 Application Form need not be included for re-submissions, unless billing or contact information has changed and needs to be updated.)
  • Separate submissions must be uploaded separately with all required documentation attached to the reference file upload.
  • All uploaded files must be in PDF format only, with no PDF security features enabled.
  • Files are to be directly uploaded to the portal account, not combined into compressed folders (no ‘ZIP’ or ‘RAR’ files) and not combined into attached upload account.
  • Uploaded files for most submission types are to be separated by content type: a single file must contain only drawings, only a single fitting catalog, or only calculations (see next section for exception for weld procedure submissions).
  • For fitting submissions, please include a scanned copy of the filled out AB-41 Statutory Declaration Form in case we are able to review it before receiving the original. As discussed above, an originally notarized hard copy must then be received before we can proceed with registration.
  • All pages, including drawings, must be easily readable without magnification when printed to 11” x 17” or smaller paper, in black and white.
  • Scanned pages should be scanned in black and white and preferably at 300 dpi. Pages should not be scanned in color or at a higher resolution unless absolutely necessary for clarity, in which case, the higher resolution should only be applied to those pages which need it. Higher resolutions and unnecessary color information can drastically increase the size of the file, making it difficult to work with.
  • Upload the AB-31 Application Form alone in a single PDF file, named simply “AB-31.pdf”.
  • Upload a scanned copy of your completed AB-41 Statutory Declaration Form alone in a single PDF file, named simply “AB-41.pdf”.
  • Alternative to AB-41
(Declaration of Conformity Form AB-351 -as alternative to the Statutory Declaration)

    • Upload an electronic format (PDF) of your completed AB-351 Declaration of Conformity Form alone in a single PDF file, named simply “AB-351.pdf”.

  • If the fittings are being manufactured at a location outside of Alberta, provide a copy of your quality control certificate in a single PDF file named “QC Certificate.pdf”.
  • Provide one or more additional PDF files with drawings and/or catalogs, and separately provide one or more PDF files with supporting calculations, correspondence, reports, etc., as required to justify registration.
  • Upload the AB-31 Application Form alone in a single PDF file.
  • Upload the rest of the submission in a single additional PDF file, entirely on letter size (8.5”x11”) pages, with documents arranged in the following order:
           i) WPS

ii) PQRs (and lab reports for each)

iii) MTRs (only for unassigned materials)

  • Any pages of the above files which are scanned must be scanned in black and white, not in color or grayscale, and scanned at a resolution of no less than 300 DPI and no more than 600 DPI.

Any questions, comments, or concerns regarding this guide or the CRN Online Web Portal can be forwarded to crnonline@absa.ca.
