Re-certification Exam

This examination refreshes the In-Service Pressure Equipment Inspector about the Act and regulation requirements and various ABSA in-service inspector safety programs.

This examination is an on-line, open book examination based on the Safety Codes Act and Regulations, AB-506 (Inspection and Servicing Requirements for In-service Pressure Equipment), AB-513 (Pressure Equipment Repair and Alteration Requirements) and Information Bulletins issued by the Administrator, available on ABSA’s website.

The examination consists of 25 multiple choice questions. The time allowed for examination is 3 hours within a 24 hour total time period. You can sign out from the exam and sign back within the 24 hour period. If you have left the time to write the examination too close to the 24 hour expiration time, your examination time may be reduced. If the time expires before you have completed all the questions, the examination will be closed and marked. When you have completed and submited your answers, or time expires, the examination will be marked by the computer and your mark will be posted to your profile. The official mark will be confirmed after verification by ABSA.

Inspector re-certification examination will be scheduled on-line by ABSA and you will be contacted by e-mail with the log-in instruction for the web site testing. You will have 30 days to log-in and activate your account. If you do not activate your account in the 30 days of receiving the log-in instructions, the log-in will become invalid and you will have to re-apply to write the examination and pay the examination fee.

Once you press the button “to create an account” your 24 hour clock starts giving you 3 hours to complete the exam.

You must obtain 80% of the marks to pass the examination. There is only one right answer to a question. The In-Service Inspector Re-certification Examination is the same for both types of certification, (In-Service Boiler and Pressure Vessel In-Service Pressure Vessel).

Applicants who do not meet the re-certification requirements, unless they have reasons and supporting documents satisfactory to the Chief Inspector and Administrator, may be required to successfully challenge an Inspector Certification Examination.

The fee for writing the re-certification examination is included in the renewal fee. However, if an applicant fails his/her examination, the applicant will be required to re-submit an application to write the Inspector Certification Examination and pay an examination fee as stated on the renewal form to try the on-line examination again.

Reinstatement of Certificate

Applicants, who have their certificate of competency expired over one (1) year, will be required to successfully challenge an Inspector Certification Examination. The renewal certificate will have an expiry date 5 years from the examination date.
