Welding Examiners

Notice about the Revised Welding Examiner and Welding Examiner in Training Certificate of Competency

A Welding Examiner Certificate of Competency authorizes the holder to conduct Performance Qualification (PQ) tests on behalf of a testing organization while employed by that testing organization.  All ABSA authorized testing organizations are required to employ a Welding Examiner to conduct performance qualification tests.

A candidate may be required to provide proof of relevant education and work experience for his/her certification application to be considered.

The Welding Examiner and Welding Examiner in Training Syllabus, Edition 1, Revision 6 (AB-94) and  The Welding Examiner and Welding Examiner in Training Syllabus, Edition 2, Revision 0 (AB-94) describes the areas of knowledge covered by the examination. It also outlines examination rules and describes the support materials that candidates may bring to the examination.

The examination itself consists of four (4) papers. The time allowed for completing each paper is three and a half (3.5) hours. To pass the examination, a candidate must obtain at least 70% of the allotted marks for each paper. The candidate must also present a current and satisfactory Eye Examination Report (ABSA Form AB-95 or equivalent) before receiving a Welding Examiner Certificate of Competency.

Welding Examiner in Training

A Welding Examiner in Training Certificate of Competency authorizes the holder to conduct Performance Qualification (PQ) tests on behalf of a testing organization while employed by that testing organization and while under the direction of the holder of a Welding Examiner Certificate of Competency who is employed by the same testing organization. However the Welding Examiner in Training cannot sign performance qualification cards.

A candidate may be required to provide proof of relevant education and work experience for his/her certification application to be considered.
