Upgrading an IPV to an IBPV Certificate
Persons certified as In-service Pressure Vessel Inspector are eligible to upgrade
their Certificate of Competency to In-service Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspector
if they have subsequently passed the National Board Commission examination and have
the required in-service boiler inspection experience or equivalent.
To obtain an upgraded Certificate of Competency, the candidate would follow the application
process for certification. If the candidate was previously exempted from Inspector
Certification Examination for his/her In-service Pressure Vessel Inspector certification,
he/she will have to successfully challenge the Inspector Certification Examination.
If the candidate previously passed the Inspector Certification Examination, he/she
will not be required to re-write the examination for the certification.
A person who holds both Certificates of Competency will, upon expiry of either certificate,
be able to renew only the one Certificate for the In-service Boiler and Pressure Vessel
Inspector. The Certificate of Competency for the In-Service Pressure Vessel Inspector
will be superseded by the In-Service Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspector Certificate
of Competency.
Existing Safety Codes Officer (Boiler)
Persons who hold permanent certification as Safety Codes Officer (Boiler) are eligible
for certification without examination. The education, experience and third party certification
requirements are considered to have been satisfied.
Level II Safety Codes Officers (Boiler) may apply for In-Service Boiler and Pressure
Vessel Inspector certification and Level III Safety Codes Officer (Boiler) may apply
for In-Service Pressure Vessel Inspector certification.
When applying for certification, complete section 1 and 2 of the application
form and submit it with an application fee as indicated on application form. No examination
fee is required. There is no deadline for certification without examination for Safety
Code Officer.
However, persons who hold permanent certification as Safety Codes Officer (Boiler)
and who hold an In-Service Pressure Vessel Inspector Certificate of Competency shall
follow all the above upgrading rules to upgrade their Certificate of Competency if
they wish to upgrade.
