Re-Certification Examination
This examination refreshes the In-Service Pressure Equipment Inspector about the Act
and regulation requirements and various ABSA safety programs. Questions on ABSA’s
programs will be from the Alberta Safety Codes Act and regulations. The re-certification
examination is an open book examination and consists of 25 multiple-choice questions.
The time allowed for the examination is one (1) hour. The candidate must obtain a
mark of at least 70% to pass the examination. The questions are broken down and graded
in the following 11 areas:
Safety Codes Act and Regulations, CSA B51, Accident Investigation, Quality Systems,
New Construction, Pressure Piping, Repairs / Alteration, Change of Ownership, Design
Registration, Welding and Service Inspections.
Candidates should bring their Alberta Safety Codes Act and regulations and CSA B51
for the examination. The Pressure Equipment related regulations are:

Inspector Re-Certification Examination Schedule:
Inspector re-certification examination will be scheduled monthly both in Edmonton
and Calgary during the Power Engineers examination week and every two months
at other ABSA exam centers on the Power Engineers examination day. Examination candidates
can pick their first and second choices of examination centre and preferred month
to write their re-certification examination.
Applicants who do not meet the re-certification requirements, unless they have reasons
and supporting documents satisfactory to the Chief Inspector and Administrator, may
be required to successfully challenge an Inspector Certification Examination.
The fee for writing the re-certification examination is included in the renewal fee.
However, if an applicant fails his/her examination, the applicant will be required
to submit an application to write the Inspector Certification Examination and pay
an examination fee as stated on the renewal form.
Reinstatement of Certificate
Applicants, who have their certificate of competency expired over one (1) year, will
be required to successfully challenge an Inspector Certification Examination. The
renewal certificate will have an expiry date 5 years from the previous expiry date.
