ABSA Board of Directors

ABSA is looking for a person to fill an upcoming position on our Board of Directors.

The vacancy is for a member to represent the oil and gas sector and as such the successful candidate, in addition to working with the other board members to provide good governance to ABSA, will also bring personal insight to the Board regarding pressure equipment safety and the oil and gas sector.

The ideal representative will have previous board experience, possess executive management experience and be familiar with pressure equipment integrity management programs.

Our Board provides guidance and direction to ABSA’s activities and programs to ensure public safety regarding the operation of pressure equipment. The Board consists of senior representatives of various facets of the pressure equipment industry.

ABSA Board members serve a three-year term with the option to serve an additional three-year term. This term would begin July 1st, 2012. Board members receive an honorarium in recognition for service and are entitled to reimbursement for travel expenses.

Design Survey Engineer (Edmonton)

Design Survey Engineers at ABSA are responsible for reviewing and registering the designs of pressure equipment for use in the province of Alberta in accordance with Alberta regulations and applicable codes and standards. Design Survey Engineers work closely with their peers and ABSA clients to ensure pressure equipment safety is maintained and that our clients are able to meet their operational objectives. This is achieved through open communication with our clients.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Previous pressure equipment design experience.
  • A thorough knowledge in applicable pressure equipment design and construction codes including: ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel codes, ASME Piping codes, and CSA B51 Boiler, Pressure Vessel, and Piping code.
  • Familiarity with ABSA's Design Review and Registration processes is an asset.

Safety Codes Officer (Inspector)

Location: Grande Prairie

ABSA, the pressure equipment safety authority is looking for the right career-minded people to become Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety Codes Officers in the province of Alberta. ABSA is designated by the Province of Alberta to ensure that pressure equipment is constructed and operated in a manner that protects public safety. Under the authority of the Safety Codes Act, Safety Codes Officers are responsible for verifying and enhancing safety of pressure equipment. Safety Codes Officers apply the following processes to verify and enhance pressure equipment safety:

  • Verify workers hold certificates of competency as power engineers, pressure welders, pressure welder examiners, or pressure equipment inspectors.
  • Verify owner's have processes in place to ensure competent operation of pressure equipment.
  • Conducting certificate of competency examinations for power engineers, operators and welders.
  • Providing education, training and information to industry.
  • Conducting audits of quality management systems for companies that require and certificate of authorization to construct, repair or alter pressure equipment; repair safety valves, test pressure welders, provide inspection services, or for pressure equipment integrity management by an owner/user.
  • Conducting audits to verify owners of operating equipment have basic integrity management systems in place.
  • Performing the duties of authorized inspector for new construction of pressure equipment.
  • Performing initial installation inspections.
  • Performing periodic inspections of in-service pressure equipment.
  • Monitoring inspection activities of owner/users and inspection companies.
  • Authorizing pressure equipment repairs and alterations.
  • Conducting accident investigations.

To qualify as a safety codes officer you should have previous experience in working with pressure equipment (design, construction, installation, operation, maintenance, inspection and repair etc) and as a minimum, one of the following technical certifications:

  1. A first or second class power engineers certificate of competency, or
  2. A bachelors degree in an engineering discipline (Mechanical, Chemical, etc.), or
  3. A two year engineering technology diploma in a related discipline (welding, materials, etc.)

Certifications from the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors, American Petroleum Institute (API), and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Lead Auditor training are an asset.
